Alison Bechdel

Covers, design and lettering | Rizzoli Lizard

Telling oneself through memory, the body, family, politics and the contradictions of everyday life: Alison Bechdel has built one of the most significant autobiographical and narrative paths in contemporary comics, bringing to her work the story of lesbian identity and LGBTQ+ culture, with a perspective that combines introspection, irony, social analysis and an extraordinary precision in portraying family and emotional relationships.
For Rizzoli Lizard we worked on the new edition of four volumes by the author, taking care of the covers, graphic design and lettering. It was a complex editorial project, designed to give consistency to the series while respecting the specific identity of each book, keeping Bechdel’s visual and narrative voice at the centre.
Particular attention was given to the cover design. The covers needed to speak to each other, make their belonging to a single authorial journey recognisable, and convey the different tone of each work: from the family memoir to the reflection on the body, from the intimate dimension to the more political and collective one.
For us at RAM it was an important project because it allowed us to engage with one of the most influential authors in international graphic novels, contributing to the construction of a new edition that is coherent, recognisable and attentive to the cultural and visual strength of her books.
